Outer Planets Atmospheres Upgrade for Orbiter 2016
by DR_AERONAUTICS
Version 1.0.0	2024-03-02
----------------------------------

Description
----------------------------------

This provides all 4 giant planets with an atmospheric module (they have none by default). The module will simulate:
- Jupiter's atmosphere from 22 bars up to 5000km above that (pretty much the top of the exosphere), in 7 distinct layers based on the Galileo probe's results.
- Saturn's atmosphere from 10 bars up to 5000km above that (pretty much the top of the exosphere), in 8 distinct layers (Thermosphere and Exosphere based on Cassini Grand Finale results).
- Uranus's atmosphere from 65 bars up to 7765km above that (the exosphere), in 9 distinct layers.
- Neptune's atmosphere from 89 bars up to 8588km above that (the exosphere), in 8 distinct layers. The module is largely based on NASA's Global Reference Atmospheric Model (GRAM) output for Neptune.

I did not include Titan, because cristiapi already created a high fidelity module based on Huygens data (Titan Atmosphere - v1.0.0). You can download it from Orbiter Hangar as well to make your collection complete.

For more information and technotes please see the 4 included PDFs. There's also a few diagrams included as well to aid in understanding. A complete simulation recreating the Galileo Probe's descent for the purposes of testing the fidelity is on my Youtube Channel (linked below).

As well as a Saturn simulation test.

Don't worry. I have tested Uranus and Neptune to the same fidelity- just haven't uploaded their results to Youtube.

Installation
----------------------------------

1. To install, unzip OuterPlanetsATMUpgrade to a temporary location like your desktop.
2. Navigate to Orbiter 2016/Config and back up the follwing 4 files in that directory by copying them out to a safe location so you can revert later if desired.
a. Jupiter.cfg
b. Saturn.cfg
c. Uranus.cfg
d. Neptune.cfg
3. Copy the contents of OuterPlanetsATMUpgrade to your Orbiter install directory. If prompted to merge folders answer Yes.
4. When prompted to overwrite Jupiter.cfg and the other config files, confirm you backed up the files. Then answer Replace the files in the destination for all prompts.
5. Start Orbiter to access the Orbiter Launchpad.
6. Choose the Extra bubble on the left pane.
7. Expand the radio button beside "Celestial body configuration".
8. Click the text "Atmosphere Configuration".
9. Click Edit below the text field.
10. In the Celestial Body Dropdown, choose Jupiter.
11. Under Atmospheric model click the dropdown.
12. Choose 2020Conjunction. Click Apply.
13. Repeat steps 10 through 12 3 times, choosing:
a. Saturn for step 10, Saturn_ATM for step 12.
b. Uranus for step 10, Uranus_ATM for step 12.
c. Neptune for step 10, Neptune_ATM for step 12. After clicking Apply, Click Close.
14. This addon should now be completely installed, and the giant planets should now have realistic upper atmospheres. Note that if you are using the D3D9 client, you may need to adjust Jupiter's settings to fine tune things in the D3D9 Atmospheric Config GUI.

To Deactivate
----------------------------------
- To improve performance in Orbiter when you are not going to a specific giant planet at all, I recommend the following:
1. Execute steps 5-9 of the install instructions
2. In the Celestial Body Dropdown, choose the planet you want to deactivate
3. Under Atmospheric model click the dropdown.
4. [None]. Click Apply. Then click close.
3. This addon should now be inactive until you re-activate from step 5 of the installation

To Uninstall
----------------------------------
- If you really want to uninstall it,
1. Perform the deactivation steps described above for all 4 giant planets.
2. Access Orbiter 2016/Config. Delete the following 4 config files and replace them with the backup files from the safe location in step 2 of the install instructions:
a. Jupiter.cfg
b. Saturn.cfg
c. Uranus.cfg
d. Neptune.cfg
3. This addon should now behave as much as the Galileo Probe does today (it doesn't exist anymore).
